Company Profile

Orazio Gualtieri
Byron and Byron was formed 1984 to supply a variety of hand crafted and traditionally finished accessories for the rapidly growing interior design sector of 1980’s Britain. The company was the brainchild of twentysomething Italian Orazio Gualtieri. This decade of energy and opportunity provided the perfect environment for a young entrepreneur to marry his knowledge of design and wood finishing techniques to produce a small range of classically decorative curtain poles.

One element was key from the start, the control of all processes of production from design, to prototyping and then manufacturing of all of every item. The luxury of having his own workshop on the premises allowed Orazio to be creative and experimental with finishes and to be very responsive to new ideas and trends in colour and design. This ability of the company to tackle problems and develop innovative ideas quickly over the years, is unique to Byron & Byron. The wooden bay poles and the decorative polmets are two obvious examples of this process.

Over a quarter of a century later Byron & Byron is still turning out curtain poles, finials and accessories, gilded, painted and polished on site. The company has grown and so have the ranges of poles and finials. This is no longer the small Islington workshop but a factory in Tottenham.

Production has become increasingly mechanized and sophisticated but there is still a high reliance on the skill and attention of a team of gilders and craftsmen. Successful new designs are now the product of experience and expertise rather than youthful exuberance.

However the core values remain unchanged, a passion for the product, a love of flamboyance and a determination to provide elegant and fitting solutions for tradional and modern window treatments.

We can:

  • Cover our poles with the client’s own fabric or wallpaper. The poles can be used in conjunction with any of the finials offered by Byron & Byron. Please note that some paper and fabrics are not suitable for this treatment, however please contact us for further details. The colour of the paper or fabric may be subject to a slight change due to the protective coating we use
  • Customise our colours to match your colour schemes, all we need is a British standard, Dulux or RAL paint reference number. Should you wish to use any other brand or paint type please contact us for further information
  • Insert track into our poles so curtains can be operated by pulley. The cording system is available for the 43, 55 and 67mm poles and, unless otherwise specified is supplied with a pulley mechanism as standard
  • Make finials and holdbacks to your specification. In addition to the vast range of finial designs already available, we also offer the facility for customised wood turning and carving. We can recreate almost any shape or style as per your specification no matter how complex or detailed
